Nagauta is a kind of long epic song based on shamisen music which evolved together with kabuki dancing in the latter half of the seventeenth century. Having absorbed the lyrics and melodies of yokyoku, jiuta （regional music）, joruri （puppet ballad-drama music）, and minyo （folk music） in the course of its development, nagauta has become very diverse in form.
