代用監獄制度は拷問や虐待を通して自白を得るために日常的に利用されている。アムネスティは、殴打や脅迫、睡眠時間の剥奪、早朝から深夜に渡る取り調べ、被疑者を不動の体勢で長時間立たせたり座らせたりするなどのさまざまな方法を記録している。
